Art Comes First has developed an ongoing creative relationship with Mexican designer Carla Fernández, collaborating across fashion, image-making, styling, performance and international cultural projects. Built around a shared respect for craftsmanship and the belief that tradition must remain a living practice, the relationship has brought ACF and Fernández together across projects for institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Fondation Cartier in Paris and Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.

Overview
Tradition Is Not Static
Carla Fernández has built a fashion practice around the preservation and evolution of Mexican textile traditions, working collaboratively with artisans and communities across Mexico.
Art Comes First shares a related philosophy: heritage has value not because it remains unchanged, but because knowledge, craftsmanship and cultural identity can continue to evolve through contemporary practice.
That common ground developed into an ongoing creative dialogue spanning styling, creative direction, fashion presentation, performance and institutional cultural projects.
From a Fashion in Motion presentation at London's V&A to creative direction and styling at Fondation Cartier in Paris and the visual narrative of Tradition Is Not Static at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, each collaboration has provided a different context through which fashion can operate as a carrier of culture.
Rather than imposing a separate ACF aesthetic onto Fernández's work, the collaboration has focused on helping frame, style and communicate the cultural language already embedded within it.

CONTEXT
A Shared Belief in Living Tradition
Carla Fernández's practice is rooted in the knowledge systems surrounding Mexican dress and textile production.
Working collaboratively with artisans across Mexico, her fashion house explores traditional construction, geometric pattern-making, weaving and embroidery while arguing that these practices should not be understood as relics of the past.
Fernández describes tradition as something that continues to move and evolve — an idea that resonates strongly with Art Comes First's own relationship with tailoring, craftsmanship and cultural heritage. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum describes her practice as maintaining long-standing creative partnerships with artisans while allowing tradition to continually change and develop.
ACF's relationship with Fernández grew from that shared position:

THE OPPORTUNITY
Translating Cultural Practice Across Different Worlds
The opportunity within the relationship was not to redefine Carla Fernández's creative identity.
It was to explore how an already powerful cultural and design language could move through different environments — from fashion presentation and photography to performance, museums and international cultural institutions.
Each context required a different response.
A fashion presentation at the V&A could communicate through movement and performance.
Fondation Cartier created an opportunity for fashion to enter into dialogue with photography, architecture and music.
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum required an image capable of operating at architectural scale while retaining the cultural meaning embedded within the garments and objects.
ACF's role evolved accordingly — using creative direction, styling and cultural understanding to translate the work without separating it from its origins.

V&A — LONDON
Fashion in Motion

Carla Fernández's relationship with London's Victoria and Albert Museum provided an early international context for the creative dialogue surrounding her work.
Presented through the V&A's Fashion in Motion programme, the event brought Fernández's work into the museum through a live fashion presentation.
The show presented pieces drawn from five collections, accompanied by a live chorus performing Fernández's Fashion as Resistance manifesto. The presentation took place during the V&A's Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up exhibition, creating a wider institutional context around Mexican creativity, dress and identity.

FONDATION CARTIER — PARIS
Fashion as Performance
Soirée Nomade · Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain
As part of Fondation Cartier's programme surrounding photographer Graciela Iturbide, Carla Fernández was invited to stage a Soirée Nomade within the Jean Nouvel-designed institution in Paris.
Fernández presented the Collectivity Collection through a catwalk-concert staged within the exhibition environment, accompanied by French electro-punk group Bagarre, who created a soundtrack drawing upon Fernández's manifesto.
Art Comes First was responsible for creative direction and styling, helping shape the fashion presentation within the wider dialogue between Fernández's clothing, Iturbide's photography, Mauricio Rocha's exhibition architecture and Bagarre's live sound. Fernández's own publication explicitly credits ACF with both roles.

Tradition Is Not Static

The creative relationship continued in Boston through Carla Fernández: Tradition Is Not Static, commissioned for the Anne H. Fitzpatrick Façade of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
The monumental image featured Fernández's Tecuán mask-bag, created with artisans Santos and Claudio Nájera of San Francisco Ozomatlán, Guerrero, alongside a garment carrying the Fashion as Resistancemanifesto.
The museum describes Fernández's wider practice as working creatively with more than 187 artisans across sixteen Mexican states, sustaining long-term relationships with communities while demonstrating that tradition continues to evolve.

Working with Fernández and photographer Oluwaseye Olusa, ACF styled the image that would ultimately operate at architectural scale across the museum façade.
Garment, body, mask and message were composed as a single visual statement, allowing the image to communicate Fernández's central proposition before audiences even entered the museum:

Beyond Individual Projects
This section is important because otherwise the case study reads like three disconnected commissions.
What connects London, Paris and Boston is not a single visual style.
