ACF x HARRIS TWEED

HARRIS TWEED

A Multi-Season Exploration of Cloth, Craft & Contemporary Tailoring

Art Comes First partnered with Harris Tweed across multiple seasons, bringing one of Britain's most recognised heritage textiles into ACF's evolving language of Punk Tailoring.
Harris Tweed supplied cloth that ACF integrated across seasonal collections, campaign imagery and an exclusive collection for Dover Street Market, before extending the relationship into an installation and live cultural presentation at Pitti Uomo in Florence.

OVERVIEW

Heritage Cloth. Contemporary Context.

The relationship between Art Comes First and Harris Tweed developed through a shared respect for craftsmanship, material knowledge and the continuation of tradition through contemporary design.

Across approximately two to three seasons, Harris Tweed supplied ACF with cloth that became part of the collective's seasonal design vocabulary.

Rather than treating the material as the subject of a single capsule, ACF integrated Harris Tweed across collections — cutting it into contemporary tailoring, combining it with contrasting materials and documenting the resulting garments through campaign imagery.

The partnership also extended into an exclusive collection for Dover Street Market and a physical presentation at Pitti Uomo in Florence, where installation, clothing and a live performance by Hypnotic Brass Ensemble brought the collaboration into a wider cultural environment.

The result was a relationship that moved from material supply to design, image, retail and experience.

CONTEXT

Tradition as a Living Practice

Art Comes First's relationship with Harris Tweed developed from a shared belief in the importance of craft.

ACF's practice had been shaped by tailoring and the traditions surrounding garment construction, but its approach was never about reproducing heritage unchanged.

Harris Tweed represented precisely the kind of material history ACF was interested in exploring: cloth inseparable from the people, place and specialist knowledge required to produce it.

ACF described this philosophy publicly at the time, explaining its preference for working with fabric makers such as Harris Tweed because of their tradition, attention to detail and the human process behind the finished garment.

The partnership created an opportunity to bring that heritage into ACF's own contemporary sartorial language across multiple seasons.

THE OPPORTUNITY

How Does a Heritage Cloth Become Part of a Contemporary Wardrobe?

The opportunity was not to create a single Harris Tweed statement piece.

It was to establish how the cloth could become part of an evolving ACF wardrobe while retaining the material identity and craftsmanship that made it distinctive.

Across successive collections, ACF explored Harris Tweed through different silhouettes, combinations and contexts — placing traditional cloth alongside leather, contemporary tailoring and the functional language of the travelling wardrobe.

This also created the opportunity to communicate the material beyond the garment itself.

Collection became campaign.

Campaign became retail.

Retail became installation.

Installation became live cultural experience.

CREATIVE APPROACH

Cloth. Cut. Image. Experience.

ACF approached Harris Tweed as a material language capable of evolving from season to season.

Rather than restricting the partnership to a single product or capsule, the cloth was repeatedly reconsidered through silhouette, construction, styling and context.

Understand the material and its heritage.

Integrate the cloth into contemporary collections.

Develop a visual language around the garments.

Translate product into exclusive retail.

Bring the story into physical and cultural space.

This allowed the partnership to evolve naturally across product, image and experience while maintaining craftsmanship as the connecting thread.

MULTI-SEASON COLLECTIONS

Harris Tweed Through the ACF Wardrobe

Across multiple seasons, Harris Tweed became part of ACF's wider material vocabulary rather than existing as a standalone collaboration product.

The supplied cloth was incorporated into ACF collections and interpreted through the collective's approach to contemporary tailoring — combining traditional textile craft with sharper silhouettes, contrasting materials and functional garments.

Harris Tweed appeared alongside leather and other fabrics, allowing texture and construction to create dialogue between heritage and contemporary dress.

The continuing use of the material allowed ACF to explore Harris Tweed differently from one collection to the next rather than defining the relationship through a single design.

CAMPAIGN & IMAGE

Giving the Material a Visual Language

The collaboration extended beyond garment design into the way the collections were documented and communicated.

ACF developed campaign imagery using Harris Tweed garments as part of its wider visual world, placing traditional cloth within contemporary styling, environments and cultural references.

Photography therefore became another stage of the design process, not simply documenting the finished product, but helping reposition how the material could be perceived.

The campaigns connected cloth, wearer, attitude and environment, creating a visual identity around the partnership that moved beyond conventional heritage imagery.

DOVER STREET MARKET

From Collection to Exclusive Retail

The partnership also extended into an exclusive ACF collection “Harris Tweed - All Black” for Dover Street Market, taking the Harris Tweed work into one of contemporary fashion's most influential international retail environments.

The exclusive provided another context for ACF's interpretation of the cloth, connecting traditional textile craftsmanship with a retail audience built around experimentation, independent design and contemporary culture.

It demonstrated that the partnership could operate not only through seasonal collection development but also through focused product created for a specific international retail platform.

PITTI UOMO

Turning the Collection Into an Environment

At Pitti Uomo in Florence, the partnership moved from garment and image into physical space.

ACF developed an installation that presented the Harris Tweed work as part of a wider cultural environment rather than a conventional trade-show display.

Clothing, material, styling and spatial presentation came together to communicate the philosophy behind the collection.

Harris Tweed's own reporting from Pitti identified Art Comes First among the independent design teams using the cloth in distinctive and innovative ways.

HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE

Bringing Sound Into the Presentation

The Pitti Uomo installation culminated in live performance from Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.

Rather than treating music as background entertainment, ACF incorporated performance into the cultural language surrounding the collection.

The musicians activated the space, bringing movement, sound and human energy into an environment built around cloth and tailoring.

The result transformed what could have remained a static fashion presentation into a live cultural experience.

ACF ROLE

Creative Direction · Fashion Design · Material Development · Punk Tailoring · Product Development · Campaign Concept · Art Direction · Styling · Photography Direction · Retail Collaboration · Installation Concept · Spatial Presentation · Live Cultural Experience

Across the partnership, Art Comes First transformed supplied Harris Tweed cloth into a multi-platform creative programme spanning seasonal collections, campaign imagery, exclusive retail and international presentation.

ACF's role extended from garment and material development through visual communication and ultimately into physical cultural experience.

OUTCOME

One Material. Multiple Expressions.

The multi-season relationship demonstrated how a heritage textile partnership could extend far beyond fabric placement.

Harris Tweed became part of ACF's evolving collections, appeared within campaign imagery, formed the foundation of exclusive product for Dover Street Market and ultimately entered an international presentation environment at Pitti Uomo.

Each expression changed the context surrounding the cloth without removing the craftsmanship at its foundation.

The relationship also provided a strong example of ACF's multidisciplinary methodology: the ability to move from material and product development into image, retail, installation and live culture while maintaining one coherent creative narrative.
