ACF x OLIVER GOLDSMITH

OLIVER GOLDSMITH

Reinterpreting British Eyewear Through Jazz, Heritage & Contemporary Design

Art Comes First collaborated with British eyewear house Oliver Goldsmith to reinterpret four models from the brand's extensive archive through a new cultural and sartorial perspective.

Inspired by early 1960s American jazz and the uncompromising style of Miles Davis, the collaboration combined Oliver Goldsmith's eyewear heritage with ACF's approach to design, music and cultural storytelling.

OVERVIEW

Four Frames. One Cultural Conversation

The collaboration brought together two British creative perspectives connected by a shared belief that heritage should provide a foundation for experimentation rather than restrict it.

Working from Oliver Goldsmith's extensive eyewear archive, Art Comes First selected established silhouettes and explored how proportion, material, colour and detailing could give them a new identity.

The resulting four-model collection - MISTINGUETT, CHARLES 53S, HEP and COLT - combined British design heritage, Japanese manufacturing and ACF's cultural language, with early 1960s American jazz providing the creative reference point.

CONTEXT

British Heritage Through a Different Lens

Oliver Goldsmith's archive represents decades of British eyewear design, including silhouettes that became closely associated with fashion, cinema and cultural figures.

Art Comes First approached that history from another part of British creative culture: tailoring, music, subculture and the idea that tradition remains relevant when it continues to evolve.

Rather than creating an entirely unrelated eyewear language, the collaboration began inside the Oliver Goldsmith archive.

The question became how established designs could be respected while being given a different attitude, proportion and cultural context.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Respect the Archive. Disrupt the Familiar.

Working with an established design archive created a particular opportunity: how could ACF introduce its own identity without removing the characteristics that made the original Oliver Goldsmith frames recognisable?

The collaboration therefore wasn't about replacing heritage with something new.

It was about identifying where heritage could be pushed.

ACF selected models from the Oliver Goldsmith archive and, through discussion with the brand, reconsidered elements including scale, lenses, colour, hardware and detailing.

Music provided the cultural lens through which those interventions could be understood — particularly the elegance, experimentation and uncompromising individuality associated with Miles Davis.

CREATIVE APPROACH

Archive. Music. Intervention. Product.

ACF approached the Oliver Goldsmith archive not as something fixed, but as a design vocabulary that could be spoken differently.

The process began by identifying existing silhouettes with enough character to retain their identity while supporting meaningful intervention.

Music then provided the cultural reference through which those models could be reconsidered.

Explore the archive.

Identify iconic silhouettes.

Introduce jazz as a cultural reference.

Rework proportion, colour and detail.

Create a contemporary interpretation without erasing the original.

THE INSPIRATION

Miles Davis — Style Beyond Music

Jazz provided more than a soundtrack for the collaboration.

The creative reference centred particularly on Miles Davis, an artist whose visual identity evolved alongside his music and whose approach to dress combined precision with experimentation.

That tension provided an appropriate framework for the collection: classic forms altered through unexpected proportion, finish and detail.

Rather than reproducing a historical jazz aesthetic literally, ACF translated its attitude into eyewear.

THE FOUR FRAMES

MISTINGUETT

Archive Character, New Detail

One of Oliver Goldsmith's more substantial silhouettes, MISTINGUETT was updated through ACF detailing while retaining the strength of its original form.

A custom 925 silver "ART FIRST" temple component introduced the collaboration directly into the construction of the frame rather than relying simply on external branding.

CHARLES 53S

Changing the Proportion

CHARLES provided one of the collection's clearest examples of design intervention.

The existing model was substantially enlarged, taking the lens diameter from 49mm to 53mm, transforming the proportions of an established Oliver Goldsmith silhouette.

Yellow-gold frames, grey lenses and a silver mirror treatment further shifted the model toward a sharper contemporary identity.

HEP

Reworking an Icon

HEP originated from one of Oliver Goldsmith's recognised archive designs.

For the ACF collaboration, original hardware was introduced at the temples while mirrored lens treatments sharpened the existing silhouette.

The intervention allowed an established Goldsmith design to remain identifiable while taking on a distinctly different attitude.

COLT

Structure & Attitude

COLT extended the collection through a more structural frame language.

Its distinctive front bar and twisted temple treatment created a sculptural quality, while mirrored lenses reinforced the visual character running throughout the collaboration.

ACF ROLE

Creative Direction · Concept Development · Archive Selection · Product Design · Cultural Research · Design Development · Colour & Detail Direction · Product Storytelling

Art Comes First worked from within Oliver Goldsmith's existing design language, selecting archive models and developing interventions that introduced a new cultural and visual perspective while maintaining the identity of the original frames.

OUTCOME

Heritage Reinterpreted Rather Than Reproduced

The collaboration resulted in four distinct eyewear models that demonstrated how an established design archive could support contemporary reinterpretation.

Rather than limiting the collaboration to branding or new colourways, existing Oliver Goldsmith models were materially reconsidered through changes in proportion, lens treatment and custom detailing.

The resulting collection brought together British eyewear heritage, ACF's multidisciplinary design language, American jazz references and Japanese manufacturing.

Contemporary retail commentary in Japan specifically recognised this approach, describing the collaboration as one that respected Oliver Goldsmith's foundations while substantially updating its established designs.

LEGACY

Archive as a Starting Point

The Oliver Goldsmith collaboration reflects a principle that continues throughout Art Comes First's work: heritage becomes most valuable when it remains open to reinterpretation.

Rather than approaching an established British institution by reproducing its past, ACF used the archive as a starting point for something new.

The project connected eyewear, jazz, craftsmanship and sartorial culture while demonstrating how relatively precise interventions — a changed proportion, an unexpected lens, a new piece of hardware — can alter the character of a familiar object.

It also forms part of a wider ACF practice built around collaborating with heritage makers and cultural institutions while maintaining the integrity of both identities.

Study the archive.
Understand its language.
Respect what matters.
Then move it forward.
